I've been writing songs with Lynne Hanson for several years now – I've produced 2 of her albums (River of Sand & 7 Deadly Spins), and we've played shows in Canada, the US, Ireland, and Holland together.   Last year over coffee at one of our favourite shops in Ottawa we decided that it was time to take this show on the road and actually make an album of co-writes, release it, and tour as The LYNNeS.

We've been busy writing over the past several months and have settled on the songs we want to include on this new album. We've decided to go old school and record to tape with Dave Draves at Little Bullhhorn Studios in Ottawa.

This is an independent release so we are going to need some help to get it done. Which is where YOU come in :-) We've set up a Kickstarter Campaign to help raise the funds we need to make and release this album. We're offering a whole bunch of rewards for our backers ... from pre-sales (download and physical versions) of the album, to postcards from the road, to a concert in your home.

You can check it out here:

WHATEVER you can do to help us with this project is HUGELY appreciated. If you aren't in a position to help financially, it would be GREAT if you could SHARE our Kickstarter Campaign with any of your friends, family, coworkers who might be interested AND/OR on Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc).

Thank you in advance for your continued support of independent music!

Excited to announced Black Flowers will be included on a new album by Claire Lynch ...

A decorated vocalist, prolific songwriter, and innovative bandleader, Claire Lynch can now add ‘diplomat’ to her list of accomplishments. NORTH BY SOUTH, her newest album, opens a window into America’s northern neighbor, paying homage to Lynch’s favorite Canadian songwriters, interpreting tracks from greats above the Great Lakes like Gordon Lightfoot and Ron Sexsmith. Backed by compatriot heavyweights Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, David Grier, and produced by Compass co-founder Alison Brown, Lynch renders the songs into bluegrass and new acoustic styles, producing an elegant blend of foreign and domestic artistry. NORTH BY SOUTH will be released by Compass Records September 16, 2016.

Songs For The Darkest Night - KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN - until December 18th
I've been writing this project for the last year and a half.  Focusing on the themes of winter in Canada, snow, and secular Christmas. I've written 13 songs for this project at this point. I've written string charts and will be performing with a string quartet, a drummer, Keith Glass on guitar and the fabulous Rebecca Campbell on harmony and the occasional lead vocal.

I have a sold out show at the NAC Ottawa Canada on Dec 20. a private concert Dec 19, and a rehearsal on Dec 18th. I'd like to film all three events and edit them into a cohesive DVD.

I'd like this to be a long term project that I can perform and add to every year. The DVD will help me get the songs out there, and hopefully help get the show promoted so we can tour it next year.

New review from CBC's Bob Mersereau:

Also the full review from Folk Roots / Folk Branches with Mike Regenstreif below.

Mike Smith’s cover painting – a beautiful, but lonely scene of a solitary farmhouse and some telephone poles out in the middle of nowhere under a stormy sky – and the title, Downpour, set the scene for the 11 superbly crafted and beautifully arranged and performed songs on Lynn Miles’ new album. It’s a scene that suggests a certain degree of chosen isolation broken up, at times, by forces of nature and communication.

Indeed, these are songs that poetically and melodically capture human loneliness, chosen and not, conflict and conflict resolution, communication and lack-of-communication and much more.

The album opens with the stunning “More,” a series of metaphorical contrasts that suggest a spirit intent on complete experiences in everything she does. Some of my other favourites on Downpourinclude “My Road,” an honest song about the loneliness and the fulfillment, the joys and the sorrows of the musician’s life on the road; “Party Too Long,” a song that I think most of us who’ve reached a certain age can relate to; “Sad,” a succession of comparisons that suggest images of sadness; and “Million Brilliant,” an insightful song that kind of shows how so many of the feelings and emotions described in many of the other songs on the album are really a part of every complex human relationship – including relationships that are sustained over time. “Million Brilliant,” by the way, would be a great song for a bluegrass band looking for superior material.

Downpour is an intimate album performed by Lynn on vocals and several instruments including guitars, piano and pump organ, and just one collaborator, producer Ian Lefeuvre on harmony vocals and multi-instruments. Lynn and Ian have worked together on several of Lynn’s earlier albums and the musical chemistry between them is palpable.

I’ve a deep appreciation for almost all of Lynn’s past work and several of her albums are favourites from my music collection. Downpour, though, has quickly become my favourite Lynn Miles album (at least until her next one) – and that says a lot.- Mike Regenstreif June 2013

Toronto Star Review
Fall for Beauty (True North)
3.5 stars (out of 4)

It seems an almost perversely guilty pleasure to fall for a roots/country singer in the midst of the multicultural bustle of Toronto. But Lynn Miles' eighth studio album, brimming with 10 of her own creations, is seductive for the very reason that this genre of music exists in the first place: sheer emotional honesty, unbridled by pretension or irony. It doesn't matter if we love opera or hip hop; all we want is to move forward in our lives, come what may.

But, as Miles sings in on the title track, “Something Beautiful,” “there is no clean getaway.” The songs' style ranges from old-country waltz to light rock (on the title track) and outright pop. Each match of poetry and melody has its own insinuating wiles. A lot of credit goes to Miles' rich voice and deft hands on acoustic guitar and piano. She gets help from producer Ian Lefeuvre, who picks up a number of instruments, double-bass player Maury Lafoy and violinist Drew Jurecka.

Top track: “Time to Let the Sun,” as it unleashes a dramatic resolve to “put your dress on/ It's time to swing and sway/ It's time to let the sun have its day.” Miles performs live at the Glenn Gould Studio on Nov. 10.
